Happiness 101: Managing Stress & Anxiety Like A Pro

Are you feeling overwhelmed, distracted, irritated, or experiencing mood swings lately? Perhaps, you’ve been searching for tips on how to reduce these feelings? You’ve come to the right place!

It’s totally normal to feel anxious from time to time especially when things aren’t going the way you plan it. You should note that stress and anxiety are like monsters under the bed stealing your peaceful night time rest. Sounds scary? Probably! Well, for starters, stress, and anxiety when occurring in moderation are acceptable since it allows us to encourage ourselves to eventually move forward. However, stress and anxiety when they occur consistently and are affecting your daily life functions are not normal.

According to studies, stress and anxiety bother nearly 70 million Americans and that’s a large chunk of the population. Everyone is susceptible to experiencing them, whether mild or severe. But don’t worry, it’s not a dead end. There are lots of things you can do to feel a bit better. Our goal is to find an outlet so you can reduce your worries and manage stress and anxiety like a pro. Take a look below and see what you can be doing to help manage your stress!

#1 The  “This Too Shall Pass” Principle

Setting proper expectations for yourself may help you when feeling stressed and anxious.  It’s essential for us to know that we cannot control everything. Just as there are some things that can’t be fixed, there are also some things you can’t control. You can’t control anyone else’s thoughts, too.

When feeling frustrated by things, one of the most powerful remedies is to remember the timeless wisdom of “This too shall pass.” Regardless of the difficulties that you're currently facing, remind yourself that it won’t be there forever. The same is true for all other good things in life. Rather, learn to appreciate the good things while there’s still time and perhaps, you’ll feel happier than ever.

#2 Self-Soothing and Stress Management Strategies

Real relaxation does not mean zoning out in front of the TV and flopping on the couch at the end of a stressful and tiring day. Sure it may help in the short term, but instead, it’s better to focus on your “natural relaxation response”. This corresponds to a state of deep rest that potentially slows your breathing and heart rate, and brings your mind and body into balance. Sounds interesting, right?

Try self-soothing strategies like deep breathing where you breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and exhale with your mouth slowly for 8 seconds. This technique relaxes the whole body and may help keep you concentrated on your breathing pattern. Many people are trying massage, yoga and mindful meditation, and even tai-chi. The right technique is the one that resonates with you, fits your lifestyle, and allows you to focus your mind to elicit the relaxation response.

#3 Diet Check

Nothing beats healthy eating habits. You should know by now that what we eat and drink can heavily impact our emotional state. Some foods which are most associated with stress and anxiety are those containing caffeine and alcohol. Studies have found that the stimulating effects of caffeine may lead to a rise in anxiety, and increase feelings of nervousness and irritability even if they are consumed in small amounts. Instead, why not opt for green leafy meals and healthy snacks when feeling hungry. Below are healthy options that you can try:

  • Avocado and Banana- They are loaded with potassium, a vital mineral to assist in keeping the blood pressure low
  • Teas- Easy to make and can help support relaxationSwiss Chard- May help support in balancing the body's stress hormone, cortisol
  • Fatty Fishes
  • Whole-Wheat Pretzels- They have carbohydrates for energy boost and can trigger the brain to release a feel-good chemical called serotonin
  • Carrots
  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Nuts- They assist in boosting your immune system with vitamins and zinc

#4 Get Moving

Exercise is great for our physical health. Many researchers have suggested that exercise may be even more helpful than meditation. Maintaining regular and moderate exercise routines have been said to help in reducing stress, improve mood, enhance self-esteem, and increase energy levels. When we exercise and get moving, the body releases chemicals called endorphins that interact with receptors in the brain. They may cause a euphoric feeling and a reduction in physical pain. It is recommended to create a routine that is right for you, whether you’re at home, in the workplace, or school.

# 5 Just a Right Amount of Sleep

According to the National Sleep Foundation in the United States, lack of sleep has been a steadily escalating problem in America. In fact, nearly one third of adult Americans say that they get insufficient sleep. The primary reason stated is the unmanageable stress and anxiety that an individual experiences daily. While many experts offer various stress and anxiety management techniques, one of the best recommendations is to sleep right and by that it means, just the right amount of sleep. Sleeping for 7-8 hours, and not oversleeping or undersleeping may affect your mood positively during the day and help you stay focused and energized.

#6 Seek Social Support and Spend Time With People You Want to Be With

When trying to reach our goals or deal with a crisis, experts frequently suggest for people to lean on their friends and family for support to help get through rough times. Being surrounded by people who are supportive and caring indeed may help in dealing with the stresses and anxieties that life may bring.
