7 Natural Tips To Boost Your Immune System

You may be one of the healthcare frontlines during this pandemic, working from home while simultaneously homeschooling kids, one of those whose job requires them to still go to the office, or just staying at home to take care of some stuff. The point is, regardless of who and where you are, your universe needs you to be healthy!

To be healthy, we need to limit our direct exposure to infectious viruses and bacteria. Daily precautions such as washing your hands regularly are essential. Yet many experts agree that it can also give you the advantage to remain safe by supporting your immune system. Not to burst your bubble, there are no magic “healthy pills” for instant immunity, but there are natural ways in which we can help give it a boost.

Here are seven natural ways to help promote your immune system all in the comfort of your own home.

1. Eat More Protein With Each Meal

You may worry about having enough protein to repair muscle tissue after a challenging workout. Protein helps your body develop lean, healthy muscles and has been linked to help in losing weight while improving your natural calorie burn. But that’s not all about protein. It also plays vital roles in the body and has been said to help fuel the immune system, stoke both bacterial and viral cells that you use to combat inflammation, and keep your guard up against health threats.*

Legumes such as soybeans, chickpeas and beans and whole grains such as quinoa and amaranth, and some vegetables, nuts, seeds, and berries appear to be some of the richest sources of protein.

2. Avoid Too Much Sugar

There is no empirical evidence to indicate that too much sugar consumption explicitly impairs the immune system. However, sugar and drinks contain many calories, may have a detrimental effect on our immune functions.

One should consume foods with more fiber instead and make sugary foods a one-off treat rather than indulging in them as it could lead to other health issues.

3. Get Sufficient Sleep

Yup, it's easier said than done, particularly if you're a night owl type of person. But here's the deal - to help keep the body running, it is recommended to have seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night. It’s always best to give priority to your sleep quality and completeness.

The value of good-quality sleep has been shown by many researchers repeatedly, demonstrating that a solid night's rest may lead to many aspects of physical and mental well-being. Research has also suggested that  proper functioning of the immune system can be linked to healthy and adequate sleep.

4. Minimize Stress

It is crucial to understand how stress impacts your wellbeing, including any effects it may have on your immune system, whether it comes on rapidly or builds over time. Studies have shown that your body responds during a period of stress by initiating a stress response. In exchange, this stress response can suppress your immune system, raising your risk to further threats.

It's important to know how to recognize stress, considering the impact it may have on your health. You can also get acquainted with practices that help you relieve tension such as the deep breathing method, meditation, yoga or exercise.

5. Get Moving

A powerful way to improve your immune system is to get moving. It allows the antibodies and white blood cells in your body to circulate more rapidly. Staying active may also lower stress hormones, helping to empower yourself when fighting bacteria and viruses. According to a recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, those who exercised at least five days a week were almost half as likely as those who were more sedentary to catch a cold. They reported less serious symptoms if they did get one.

In your work out session, there may also be a protective advantage from your sweat. Research has shown that merely sweating may raise your body temperature, helping your body to combat viruses and bacteria.*

The key to effective exercise is moderation. Doing too much or too intensive exercise routines may put so much stress on your body which may be detrimental to  your immune system. It is advised to do at least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise every day for overall health.

6. Drink Plenty of Fluids, Especially Warmer Fluids

Consuming sufficient fluids may benefit all the functions of your body, including the immune system. The value of drinking water can not be stressed enough. Water helps to deliver oxygen to the cells of your body, which may result in more efficient  bodily functions. In fact, if you start feeling unwell, consider simply drinking water as a first step. Hydrating your body also aids in detoxification and elimination of toxins build-up.

Some experts recommend warmer fluids like herbal teas as plain water may be harder to keep drinking. You can also add a little bit of your favorite fruits. Remember that consuming water can be fun and healthy at the same time.
